ÑÑÑÑIMPORTANT NOTEÑÑÑÑ
This Virex anti-virus software EVALUATION VERSION comes only with the Virex application and Virex Scheduler features, but otherwise functions exactly as the full released version of the software does. This version will, however, expire within 30 days from the time you install it. McAfee and Dr Solomon encourage you to upgrade your Virex version to a full product release.
ÑÑÑÑÑ
NEW FEATURES
Ñ Full MacOS 9 support
All Virex components include full support for MacOS 9, including the new
multiple users function. Individual users can specify their own schedules
for Virex operations that run when each user logs in. The system Owner
can also schedule updating and scan operations that apply to the entire
system, and that will run no matter who has logged in. The Virex software
takes full advantage of the MacOS 9 Appearance Manager, but can also run
without this MacOS feature enabled, though the Schedule Editor will not
function in this mode. Virex software will also display and use Navigation
Services dialog boxes, if you have them enabled on your system.
Ñ Advanced Scheduling component
The Virex application now includes a redesigned and improved scheduling
module that allows you to set times during which the Virex application will
look for viruses on your system and repair any infected files it finds. You
can also use the scheduler to have the Virex application update its Virus
Definition files and scan engine at regular intervals.
Ñ New Electronic Updating
This Virex release makes updating your Virus Definition files and the
Network Associates scan engine simple and painless. Just use the eUpdate
module in the Virex Preferences dialog box to designate the location from
which you want to download new files. Next, use the Virex Schedule Editor
module to tell the application when you want to perform the update task.
Ñ Improved scanning performance
This Virex release includes the latest revision to the McAfee and Dr Solomon
Olympus scanning engine, which provides consistent, industry-leading
virus detection and removal rates. The engine detects and removes all of
the viruses aimed specifically at the Macintosh platform, along with
those cross-platform agents that affect the Macintosh platform.
Ñ Better security
The Virex application includes a Security preferences panel that allows
you to protect your scan task settings from tampering. Use this feature
to configure, then lock down, the configuration options you choose for
Virex users on your network, or to prevent other users who log on to
your Macintosh system from altering your settings without
authorization.

Associates FTP site in Adobe Acrobat .PDF format.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
Q: Now that Network Associates has taken over development of the Virex
product, what are the company's plans for it?
A: Network Associates, though its McAfee and Dr Solomon Software divisions,
is fully committed to retaining Virex anti-virus software in its product line,
and to developing and enhancing the software's functionality and performance
for the foreseeable future. Plans call for engine enhancements and
improvements, with new scanning technology built from a combination of the
best elements of the McAfee and Dr Solomon product lines; and full backing
from the Network Associates Anti-Virus Emergency Response Team (AVERT)
and its worldwide network of research teams.
Q: I've discovered what looks like a large infection on my network from a
virus that the Virex software can't identify. I've already updated my Virus
Definitions file with the latest update--what else can I do?
A: If you discover a new virus that the Virex software cannot detect or repair
with the latest Virus Update file, contact Network Associates technical
support to obtain a Custom Virus Update file for that virus. Technical
support will ask you to supply copies of suspicious files and of your
most recent Virex log file.
The Custom Update file supplements the regular Virus Update file until
the regular update includes protection for the new virus. The Custom files
behave exactly as the regular files do, but the Virex software will indicate
that it is using the update file at the bottom of the Virex application window
and in various other places in the program. When you next update your
Virus Definitions file, the Virex software will ask you whether you want to
remove the Custom Update file from use. Because a later update file will
normally have the ability to detect or repair the new virus, you should in
most cases choose to remove the Custom Update file.
